Moroccan Student’s Death in France Sparks Family’s Call for Investigation and Repatriation

Friday 21 August 2020, by Bladi.net

The family of a Moroccan student, Ismail Essiari, who died in a road accident last May, was only informed of the tragedy a few days ago. Devastated by this news and with limited financial means, the deceased’s relatives are demanding the repatriation of his body to his country of origin.

Originally from Agadir, the 24-year-old Moroccan, a physics L3 student at the University of Orléans in France, found himself twice in a row at the Georges Daumézon psychiatric hospital in Fleury-les-Aubrais, reports France3.

After these two stays in this hospital center, the young student requested a laissez-passer from the Moroccan consulate in Orléans. Unfortunately, the consular authorities did not issue the document necessary for his return to Morocco.

After moving in early May, he settled in Saint-Denis, in the 93rd district. According to the same site, this was the last contact he had with his relatives before being killed in an accident under still very vague conditions. According to the family’s lawyer, the victim’s relatives only heard from him after three months of searching and after alerting the Moroccan consulate in Orléans, the French police, hospitals and even social networks.

For the lawyer, the family’s attention is now focused on "the judicial conclusions" in order to clarify the circumstances of the death and the reasons for the dysfunction that kept Ismail’s relatives in the dark. They are much more concerned with the repatriation of their son’s body. According to the lawyer, burying the young Moroccan student in France would, in their eyes, be like a "second disappearance."
