Moroccan Singer Becomes Top Arab Celebrity in South Korea

Leaving Morocco in 2018, Kim Miso, whose real name is Ibtissam Harakat, settles in Korea where she fulfills her dreams of becoming a singer and promoting Korean, a language she fell in love with in 2008. Today, she has become the biggest Arab celebrity in the country.

It all started with a Korean series broadcast on Moroccan television. "In 2008, Moroccan television aired a Korean series called My Name Is Kim Sam Soon. I was stunned by the humor and quality of this series and, from that moment on, I started wanting to watch other Korean series because I fell in love with the Korean language at first sight - or first sound," Kim Miso tells the Mymusictaste website. Her love for the Korean language was such that she ended up going to Korea in 2018. "When I started researching Korean culture, I started listening to K-pop songs like Super Junior and Girls’ Generation. Then I started to understand words like "Hello" or "Thank you". I came to Korea in 2018 to study the language at SNU (Seoul National University)."

Today, she masters Korean. Five years later, Kim creates a YouTube channel to promote Korean culture and becomes an influencer. "Five years ago, when I arrived in Korea, I created a YouTube channel to show Arabs the amazing and beautiful aspects of Korean culture," she recounts. Quickly, she knows enormous success. "It attracted a lot of people’s attention, and the audience of my channel started to grow and grow, as we do today," she added. Today, her YouTube channel has over 1.44 million subscribers and the number of her followers has reached 793,000 on Instagram. At the same time, Kim is launching into music: "Being a singer was one of my childhood dreams because I loved being on stage and attracting attention, but I have to work hard for that, even today. I’ve never learned to sing, dance or perform on stage, and I’ve only been learning music for a year and a half. I still have a long way to go, and I respect everyone’s opinions and comments, but negative comments won’t discourage me. It will only push me to work harder and show them my ideas, like my song ’No More’ - people loved the message it contains!"

Kim has released several covers and original music in Korean, met idols like BTS and worked with XEED, auditioned at HYBE. Her single and album that were well received by the Korean public are respectively "Drop" and "Shine". "I love R&B and especially K-pop ballads, that’s why I started singing. That’s why I started singing. I felt that these songs made me happy. My favorite K-pop group is of course BTS and my favorite K-pop artists are Jessi, Hyuna and J-hope. If I had the chance to work with these artists, I wouldn’t want anything else!" In a short time, she has become the biggest Arab celebrity in Korea. "I didn’t know I had Korean fans here before my last concert in Korea in December. I found out that people were starting to know me and tell me things like ’Do you know who Kim Miso is? Sometimes, some Koreans are surprised to learn that I’m a singer or a celebrity and they start asking me for photos or autographs,’ Kim rejoices. And to add: "I’m really grateful for all the support my fans have given me so far. My precious fans are called "soupdel" - and I wish them to realize their dreams and never give up."
