Moroccan Petition Calls for Removal of Colonial-Era Statue at French Consulate

While movements against racism and police violence are vandalizing statues in London and other cities, an online petition calls for the "immediate dismantling and removal" of the statue of Hubert Lyautey from the French consulate in Casablanca.
Moroccans no longer want to see the statue of Hubert Lyautey triumphant on his horse, his gaze fixed on the horizon and holding his marshal’s baton in his hand on their territory, reports TelQuel.
This statue, which reminds them of the colonial past, has never been unanimous. "We demand the immediate dismantling and removal of this statue from Moroccan territory," wrote the petition’s signatories. For them, the presence of this monument to the colonizer is "an insult to all those who gave their lives to liberate Morocco and an affront to the independent Moroccan people."
This vestige of the colonial era would have already been moved, and would therefore no longer be on Moroccan territory, according to the same source.
