Moroccan peppers banned in Germany

These Moroccan peppers, which arrived from Spain, were withdrawn from the German market following a health inspection that revealed excessive levels of Abamectin residues, a pesticide harmful to human health, reports Hortoinfo. Analyses carried out on this batch of Moroccan peppers detected a minimum of 0.12 mg/kg – ppm and a maximum of 0.29 mg/kg – ppm of this pesticide, whereas the maximum residue limit (MRL) required is 0.03 mg/kg – ppm.

The RASFF, the system for alerting about problems relating to agri-food products in the European Union, described the situation as very concerning, indicating that Abamectin can affect the nervous system and lead to depression or even death through respiratory arrest. RASFF added that it is a slow-acting pesticide, emphasizing its harmfulness if inhaled or in contact with the skin.
