Moroccan Official Attempts Risky Sea Crossing to Return Home Amid Repatriation Delays

The municipal councilor of Taoujtat, in the Meknès region, has just tasted the anguish experienced by illegal migrants, by taking a boat to cross over to Morocco. He was arrested and returned to the hotel where he is staying.
It seems that the Moroccan government’s prevarications regarding the date of repatriation of the thousands of Moroccans stranded abroad have exhausted the patience of the official, who has been stuck in a hotel in southern France since last March.
In a statement to the site Alyaoum24, the man said he could no longer stand the long days spent waiting for a solution from the Moroccan authorities. Despair drove him to choose this path, knowing full well that it was doomed to fail, he added.
Around fifty Moroccan nationals, stranded in France, also demonstrated on Monday in front of the Moroccan embassy in Paris, to demand their return to Morocco. They each received a fine of 135 euros for violating the confinement rules.
