Moroccan Minister Defends Jewish Official’s Role in Islamic Endowment Management
Friday 10 November 2023, by
Following an intervention by Nabila Mounib, deputy of the Unified Socialist Party (PSU) before the Commission on Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Islamic Affairs and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Ahmed Toufiq, Moroccan Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, had to explain the management of certain waqfs by a Moroccan Jew.
"The one who manages the waqfs (a donation made in perpetuity by a private individual to a public, pious or charitable work, editor’s note) of Rabat and Salé is a Zionist Jew who would be a relative, if not the very brother of the Israeli Minister of the Interior Aryé Dery," Ahmed Ouihmane, president of the Moroccan Observatory against Normalization, recently declared. Adopting this statement, Nabila Mounib asked Ahmed Toufiq to provide explanations to Parliament on the reasons that led his department to entrust this management to a Jew "known for his ties with a senior Israeli official".

It emerges from the minister’s explanations that this Jewish compatriot "belongs to the fourth generation of this Jewish family. The only case that would justify his dismissal is the existence of an administrative decision against him, failing which he cannot be dismissed solely because he is Jewish," reports h24info. According to Ahmed Toufiq, the Jew’s family has been granted the management of these waqfs "since the time of Sultan Moulay Youssef".
Mounib also questioned the minister about information according to which a Jewish citizen would be awaiting a royal appointment at the head of the Zakat Foundation in Morocco. A rumor according to Toufiq.
