Moroccan Migrant’s European Dream Ends in Canary Islands Disappointment

Hamza, a young Moroccan who went in search of the Eldorado, saw his dream darken in the Canary Islands. After several attempts to reach Valencia and now with limited means, he had to negotiate his repatriation with the police at the airport, preferring to live modestly in Morocco rather than in precariousness in the Iberian neighbor.
At 25, Hamza, a young Moroccan, like many young people his age, dreamed of succeeding in a European city in order to provide for his family’s needs, reports El Diario.es. Driven by this illusory dream, he boarded one of the makeshift boats to cross the Atlantic and reach Spain with the 2,000 euros he managed to borrow from his mother, a seamstress from Beni Mellal.
Unfortunately, his boat was intercepted in the Canary Islands where he was sent to a refugee camp for three days. His three attempts to reach Spain were unsuccessful. The restrictive measures imposed on travelers at airports did not facilitate his departure for Valencia. "I’ve only spent money and I’m still in the same place," regrets the young boy. "I can’t take it anymore. Even if they offer to go to ’Greater Spain’, I don’t want to go there anymore," hammered this young man who says he has lost faith and has requested anonymity for fear that his mother and friends will learn the story.
Determined to return home, he slept at the Gran Canaria airport for five days before finding an opportunity to be repatriated this Friday to the country. "In Morocco, I wasn’t living very well. My life was modest, but much better than my current situation. I came to change (the situation) for the better, but everything has gotten worse," he added, promising not to try this adventure again.
