Moroccan Man Jailed for 8 Months After Sandwich Theft and Assault in Belgian Store

A sausage sandwich and an illegal stay, a cocktail that led a 33-year-old Moroccan man straight to court. The Bruges court sentenced him to eight months in prison for an incident that took place in a Carrefour Express at the Bruges train station.
On March 28, Jaouad B. was caught in the act of eating a sausage sandwich he had not paid for. When an employee of the store asked him to pay the bill, the man refused, triggering an altercation. The Moroccan man punched the employee several times, who retaliated with a knee strike. In the process, the accused also took a sip of water from a bottle he had not paid for. This item was confiscated by another employee who emptied it on Jaouad B.’s head.
When the police arrived on the scene, Jaouad claimed he did not have the means to pay the 3.45 euro bill. He said he had tried to resolve this problem by asking other customers for money, while firmly denying having hit the employee. To these charges is added that of illegal stay. The man had received an order to leave Belgian territory in 2016.
