Moroccan Man in France Sentenced for Sharing ISIS Propaganda on Facebook

Monday 19 June 2023, by Said

A Moroccan residing in Cazoul-les-Béziers was sentenced, in immediate appearance, to a 2-year prison sentence and a permanent ban from French territory for terrorism apology.

The investigation, led by the departmental judicial police directorate (DTPJ) of Montpellier, was initiated following an alert received on May 22, 2023. The intelligence services were thus able to identify a number of messages and propaganda videos of the Islamic State, disseminated by the defendant on Facebook between November 2022 and May 2023, reports Hérault Tribune. These publications explicitly called for jihad and terrorist attacks.

During his custody, the man, who only had a simple driving license offense in 2014 on his record, admitted to having disseminated this content. The charges against him were all the more serious as the Criminal Code provides for a sentence of up to seven years in prison for the apology of terrorism through online messages.

The Moroccan has appealed, so his case will be re-examined by the Montpellier Court of Appeal.
