Moroccan Man in France Sentenced for Domestic Violence; Wife Seeks Divorce

The Béziers Criminal Court sentenced a Moroccan residing in France to two years in prison, including one suspended, with an obligation to receive treatment, for habitual acts of violence. His wife broke down in tears after the verdict.
The young woman has repeatedly refused to become a civil party, but on August 24 she went to the gendarmerie again to file a complaint. The gendarmes arrested her husband. He was tried before the Béziers Criminal Court for habitual acts of violence, as a repeat offender, reports Midi Libre.
She requests a lawyer to defend her husband, but also to initiate divorce proceedings. "I withdrew my complaint for the sake of the children. He loves them. I want to divorce and I want him to get treatment. It’s just material damage when he gets angry. Each time, the children sleep but I know they hear," she explains during her husband’s appearance.
"In Morocco, we risk nothing. It’s not like here," declares the defendant. However, he says he regrets what he has done. His wife had made him an appointment with a psychiatrist for his violence problems, but he did not go.
The attitude of the young woman annoys the public prosecutor’s representative: "I will ask for the requalification of the facts. The victim has systematically withdrawn her complaints. There is the cultural heaviness, the love and she minimizes the facts, she is in denial. Madam, you have to take your responsibilities. The children are sponges when they live in violence and he doesn’t care about getting treatment."
The verdict was handed down: the Moroccan received two years in prison, including one suspended, with an obligation to receive treatment. He is prohibited from contacting his wife.
