Moroccan Man Fined $65,000 for Smuggling Fake Rolex Watches in France

The Clermont-Ferrand criminal court sentenced a Moroccan man in absentia to three months in prison with probation for "possession of counterfeit goods" and "smuggling of prohibited goods." Counterfeit luxury watches had been found in his van.
In addition to the three-month suspended prison sentence, the "smuggler" must also pay a fine of 60,000 euros and pay 4,500 euros to Rolex for the infringement of the right to the image and 1,000 euros for the moral damage. The criminal court had already sentenced him in his absence to the same penalty on January 10, 2022, but he had objected to it, reports La Montagne.
The facts with which he is charged date back to 2020. On October 23, the customs officers of the internal surveillance brigade (BSI) of Clermont-Ferrand had, during a check, on the A75 motorway, at the level of Authezat, intercepted the Moroccan in the Puy-de-Dôme with counterfeit luxury watches: six Audemars Piguet, three Michaël Kors and nine Rolex hidden in a box wrapped in a blanket under the passenger seat. The value of these authentic watches would be 176,000 euros.
