Moroccan Man, 73, Faces Trial for Violent 2016 Attack in Nérac, France

Driss Boutamjine, a 73-year-old Moroccan accused of attempted murder, will appear this Wednesday, September 30, before the Assizes Court in Agen. He has been in pre-trial detention since June 2016.

The facts had occurred on the night of June 9, 2016, in Torrebien, in Nérac. As a father and his son were going to a funeral, the son was seriously injured in the face. The next morning, the police arrived at the scene where they found an injured man sitting at the intersection of two paths, reports La Dépêche.

The injured man was rushed to the Purpan hospital in Toulouse. The facial injuries testify to the seriousness of the injuries. Twenty surgical interventions, a deformation of the jaw, loss of taste and smell, three grafts, loss of the left eye... The cause? A shot fired a few meters away. At this distance, the pellets are still grouped together, explains a ballistic expert. The victim was taken care of by the emergency services.

For their part, the gendarmes launched a wanted notice concerning the neighbor suspected of attempted murder. The victim’s father confesses to having witnessed the scene that night. The gendarmes contact the suspect by phone. Armed with his rifle, he goes to the Agen police station where he will be arrested without incident and then placed in custody.

At the bar, the septuagenarian repeatedly denies the attempted murder. "Since 1977 (the year of his arrival in Torrebien, editor’s note), I piss in my pants when the [...] are there," he told the investigating judge. It’s hard to believe him. Since the relations between the neighbors are not the most pleasant. We mention complaints, court decisions and attempts at conciliation with the sub-prefect and the mayor at the time.

The judgment will be rendered on October 2.
