Moroccan Land Agency Chief Accuses Rights Group of Fraud in Property Dispute

Before Parliament, the Director General of the National Agency for Land Conservation, Cadastre and Cartography, Karim Tajmouati, presented a report on the inventory of abandoned real estate properties (around 4,200) in Morocco. During his presentation, he pointed an accusing finger at the Association for Rights and Justice in Morocco (ADJM) representing victims of land spoliation.
The director general blames the ADJM for never having returned the 400 files it had mentioned during the meeting of June 4, 2018 with the Ministry of Justice at the time of the former minister, Mohamed Aujjar, reports L’Économiste. "I haven’t seen a single file to this day. To my knowledge, these cases that the association claims do not have been transferred to the competent authorities either," says Karim Tajmouati. For him, the ADJM is "mostly composed of thieves".
However, this association has never acknowledged the official number of land spoliation cases. According to its secretary general, Stéphane Vabre, there are only about a hundred files. "The list we have had since 2018 is based on a census carried out through the association’s website (www.droitjusticemaroc.fr). Applicants deposit their documents there accompanied by an affidavit," he says.
The ADJM is surprised by the accusations against it. Through the voice of its spokesperson, the association says it has never been summoned to the quarterly meeting agreed with the ministry, nor to that of the anti-spoliation commission despite its insistent request. The ADJM announces that it will send a letter to King Mohammed VI and says it is ready to explain itself.
Similarly, it intends to contact the Director General of the Land Administration to enlighten him on the basis of his accusations. "His statements are surprising! Mr. Tajmouati may be the victim of false information," declares the Secretary General of the association of victims of land spoliation. The association will send a third letter to the parliamentarians.
