Moroccan Inmate Found Dead in French Prison Cell, Investigation Launched

While he was to appear in the next few days before the Tulle correctional court for assault on two prison guards, a young Moroccan inmate, illegally in France, committed suicide in the Neuvic detention center. An investigation is underway to understand the exact circumstances of his death.
According to several union sources, prison guards found a 22-year-old Moroccan inmate hanged in his cell in the disciplinary wing of the Neuvic prison during the night of Wednesday, May 3 to Thursday, May 4, at 3 a.m., reports France Bleu Périgord. This young man had just been transferred from the Uzerche prison in Corrèze. On April 16, he had assaulted two prison guards aged 37 and 34 with a razor blade. An assault for which he was to appear before the Tulle court on May 15, according to Solène Belaouar, public prosecutor of Périgueux.
The Moroccan inmate is described as a young man illegally in France who was subject to a 10-year ban from the territory. To his credit, 54 disciplinary procedures. Incarcerated since 2021, he was serving a sentence until January 2026. According to the Périgueux Prosecutor’s Office, he was well known to the justice system for acts of theft, vandalism, and insults in particular, and not for suicidal tendencies. An investigation is underway to determine the causes of death. An autopsy is not ruled out.
