Moroccan UN Envoy Accuses Algeria of ’Diplomatic Terrorism’ in Western Sahara Dispute

Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN, denounced the actions of Algerian ambassador Amar Benjama during the debate on the Moroccan Sahara issue at the C24 Seminar, held from May 14 to 16, 2024 in Caracas, Venezuela.
"The C24 meetings have always been a space of freedom of expression respected by all. However, instead of answering my questions about his country’s responsibility in the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, my Algerian colleague went to terrorize a delegation for the simple reason that it defended the Moroccanness of the Sahara," Omar Hilale lashed out. He assured that "Algerian diplomatic terrorism is well known to friendly delegations supporting the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, both in the C24, in the Fourth Committee and in the General Assembly in New York, including in their respective capitals, and unfortunately today in Caracas." The Moroccan diplomat did not hesitate to confront Amar Benjama. "We are not in Algiers, Mr. Ambassador," he told him. The Moroccan diplomat did not fail to criticize Algeria for its interference in the sovereign decisions of States, its blackmail on friendly countries under examination in the Council to whom it demands to change their position on the Sahara issue in order to obtain its support.
Omar Hilale also responded to the Algerian diplomat’s amalgamation between the issue of the Moroccan Sahara and that of Palestine, as well as his tendentious remarks on the American recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara. "You boast of defending Palestine in the Security Council, that is your role as the representative of the Arab countries within this body, but you forbid your people to demonstrate in favor of Palestine, because you are afraid of the Algerian people when they take to the streets. Unlike you, the demonstrations of support for the Palestinian population of Gaza know no restrictions in the Kingdom of Morocco." The diplomat will continue: in Algeria "there is neither freedom of expression, nor freedom of movement, nor freedom of assembly. All human rights organizations have been dissolved. Your country has just promulgated the most liberticide Penal Code, which allows the conviction to 30 years in prison of any person simply expressing his opinion and you come to Caracas to give lessons on self-determination, freedom and independence".
