Moroccan Diaspora Remittances Soar, but Investment in Home Country Lags

Despite record remittances, the contribution of Moroccans residing abroad to productive investment in their country of origin remains below expectations. This issue was at the heart of discussions during the first Economic Forum of Moroccans of the World (FEMM), where ideas were outlined to reverse the trend.
The observation was clearly made by Karim Zidane, Minister Delegate in charge of Investment. While diaspora remittances reached 117.7 billion dirhams in 2024, or more than 7% of national GDP, the share of their direct private investments amounts to only 10%. Faced with this proportion deemed low, Mr. Zidane highlighted the need to "review the approach, simplify procedures, strengthen support and create a more attractive environment" to encourage greater financial involvement of these nationals.
This desire to better capture MRE investment is based on the recognition of its considerable contribution. The official also insisted on the fact that "Moroccans around the world, through their success and expertise, actively contribute to the international influence of the Kingdom". He also described the attachment of these citizens to their homeland as an "invaluable wealth", a potential to be valued for national development.
The commitment to better mobilize MRE investments is shared at the highest level. Karim Zidane recalled King Mohammed VI’s constant attention to Moroccans of the world, stating that "our ambition for a stronger and more open Morocco cannot be realized without the contribution of its children, including those who shine internationally". In this vein, Moulay Ismaïl Lamghari Moubarrad, Secretary General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in charge of Moroccans residing abroad, confirmed that ambitious reforms have been undertaken to improve the business climate and strengthen ties with MREs.
According to Mr. Lamghari Moubarrad, all stakeholders are now mobilized to increase the participation of Moroccans abroad in the national investment effort. This dynamic is considered particularly strategic as Morocco prepares to host events, notably the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025 and the Football World Cup in 2030.
