Moroccan Customs Rules for Rental Cars: What MREs Need to Know

For MREs, opting for a rental car can prove to be a convenient solution for getting around during a stay in Morocco. This alternative offers a certain flexibility, but it involves becoming familiar with the formalities of temporary importation to avoid any administrative hassle. It is better to take precautions in advance to fully enjoy your trip.
It is quite possible to cross the Moroccan borders with a rental vehicle registered abroad. The latter will be able to circulate under the temporary admission (AT) regime, thus allowing freedom of movement throughout the territory for a determined period. However, a few conditions are required and the presentation of certain supporting documents is essential.
At customs clearance, it will be necessary to present the documents relating to the vehicle. It is therefore important that the rental agency provide these papers before the trip. Proof of residence abroad, through the presentation of the residence permit, will also be required. Finally, you will have to bring the rental contract attesting to the status of vehicle tenant.
It is worth recalling this quote from the original text: "If you enter the country in a rental vehicle, the latter can be imported into Morocco under the temporary admission regime upon presentation, to the customs services at the entry office, of the required documents."
It should also be borne in mind that a vehicle admitted temporarily cannot stay more than six months per calendar year on Moroccan territory. This rule is immutable.
In summary, to facilitate your customs clearance, here is the list of documents that must be absolutely gathered:
• Vehicle documents
• Residence permit abroad
• Rental contract
