Moroccan Customs Cracks Down on Fake Gold Ring Spanning Major Cities

The Moroccan customs service is intensifying field investigations to dismantle a network specialized in the marketing of counterfeit gold, active between Casablanca, Meknes and Tangier.

The customs inspectors are conducting their investigations based on data provided by the risk monitoring and analysis unit, as well as information reported by the regional customs surveillance teams regarding the falsification of official hallmarks, the use of stolen gold and smuggling by jewelry shops and workshops.

The preliminary results of the ongoing investigations have revealed the involvement of craftsmen in mixing gold with illegal quantities of copper, presenting them as 18-carat pure gold. The customs control services are active, in coordination with the gendarmerie, the national security and the local authorities (caids and pashas), to identify the production sites and carry out surprise raids.

According to Hespress, the investigators are targeting businesses located on the outskirts of Casablanca and Meknes, which use social networks, particularly TikTok, to quickly sell their products. Workshops for the manufacture of gold in Safi are also the subject of an investigation, add the same sources, specifying that the inspectors are investigating the origin of gold products bearing false hallmarks, coming from large cities like Casablanca.

The investigators are also trying to verify the practice of these workshops consisting of mixing smuggled jewelry from France and Italy with locally manufactured products, after their melting and the modification of their appearance.
