Moroccan Beekeepers Warn of Dangerous Fake 'Aphrodisiac' Honey Flooding Markets

"Aphrodisiac" or "virility" honey is flooding the Moroccan market and worrying the Moroccan Union of Beekeeping Professionals.

The Moroccan Union of Beekeeping Professionals has alerted to the danger of the proliferation on the markets of a product called "aphrodisiac honey" or "virility honey". It recalled that it had already several times alerted to the dangerousness of these products circulating on the Moroccan markets and which are also sold online under various commercial names. These are mixtures that "have no connection with products from the hive", the trade union organization also specifies.

According to the information on the packaging, this virility honey would be produced in Morocco, but bears no legal mention of labeling, except for a "patent number issued by the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property, as well as a registration number in the commercial register and a tax identifier", without any indication of city or phone number, the organization points out.

The union has warned against the harmful effects of this product on the health of Moroccan consumers. It also called for the generalization of control measures nationwide and "the taking of firm measures against fraudsters". The trade union organization’s cry of alarm was heard. The police and market control and food quality services raided a business in the city of Meknès and seized a quantity of "aphrodisiac honey", presented as a supposedly composed mixture of beekeeping products.

An action welcomed by the union: the authorities "deserve all the thanks and recognition for this action which made it possible to avoid serious harm resulting from the sale of these substances, which, according to the competent authorities, do not meet any health or safety standards".
