Moroccan Artist Wins Courage Award at Angoulême Comics Festival for Challenging Taboos

The Moroccan cartoonist Zainab Fasiki received, on Saturday, March 19, the Courage Award at the Angoulême Comics Festival. A consecration for the young woman known for her commitment to defending the cause of women.
The Artistic Courage Award is presented each year on the sidelines of the Angoulême International Comics Festival. The 2022 edition was awarded to the Moroccan Zainab Fasiki. At the age of 27, she denounces sexism and the commitment with which her drawings promote the freedom of women to dress and express themselves as they wish.
In "Hshouma: Body and Sexuality in Morocco", published in 2019, she puts her finger on taboo subjects that she believes need to be addressed for the safety and protection of women. The word is used to silence women. "Sexual and bodily liberation has not been invented by other countries, these are our natural needs and our rights, regardless of our nationality," she says.
Created in 2016 by the promoters of the "Off of Off" of Angoulême, the Artistic Courage Award rewards an author who has defied censorship, who stands out, in his country, for his courage. Zainab Fasiki succeeds the Algerian Nime, winner in 2020.
