Montpellier Imam Charged with Rape and Sexual Assault of Minor Family Member

The imam of the Aïcha mosque, Mohamed Khattabi, 59, was brought before the public prosecutor on Wednesday, May 27, then placed under judicial supervision with a ban on practicing for rape and sexual assault on a minor.
It all started with a complaint filed at the end of 2019 by a woman, a member of the imam’s family, reports La Gazette de Montpellier. She accuses Mohamed Khattabi of having raped and sexually assaulted her when she was a minor.
In 2003, rumors were circulating that the religious figure, then imam of the Beaucaire mosque in the Gard, would be the author of sexual assaults. However, these rumors were not confirmed. No legal follow-up.
The Montpellier Criminal Court had convicted Mohamed Khattabi and his wife in May 2016. They were prosecuted for fraud committed to the detriment of the Family Allowance Fund and the tax administration.
The imam could be tried, in the course of June, as part of this new case.
