Mauritania-Morocco Customs Dispute: Negotiations Underway to Resolve Trade Tensions

The Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Marzoug, said on Monday, during his visit to Rabat, that negotiations are underway to find a solution to the recent increase in customs duties on goods from Morocco.
On an official two-day visit to Rabat, Mohamed Salem Ould Marzoug assured that a "solution will be found" to this situation to allow Moroccan truckers to transit their goods without difficulty via the Guerguerat crossing. Mauritania has recently decided to increase customs duties on Moroccan products in transit on its territory, disrupting Moroccan exports.
"The dialogue process is already underway on this issue and the two countries will work to find a solution to this issue," insisted the head of Mauritanian diplomacy, during a joint press conference with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. Mohamed Salem Ould Marzoug also took the opportunity to hail the excellence of relations between Morocco and Mauritania, reaffirming the willingness of the two countries to strengthen their cooperation.
For his part, Nasser Bourita stressed the solidity of bilateral relations between Rabat and Nouakchott, under the impetus and leadership of King Mohammed VI and President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani. "The human relations between Morocco and Mauritania are unique and distinguished," said Bourita, indicating that the largest community of foreign students in Morocco is Mauritanian.
The Moroccan Foreign Minister did not fail to salute the important role played by Mauritania in maintaining peace and stability in the Sahel region and West Africa. At the economic level, Morocco remains Mauritania’s first economic partner, added Bourita, noting the major role of this country in the economic exchanges of the Kingdom with sub-Saharan Africa.
