Marrakech Imposes Water Restrictions Amid Severe Shortage

The residents of the Marrakech region will now have to comply with a series of measures taken to rationalize water resources. The regional authorities want to address the water shortage.
This emergency plan aims to preserve resources that are becoming increasingly scarce, regardless of their origin: distribution network, such as groundwater, indicates a decree by the Wali of the region, Karim Kassi-Lahlou, issued on January 26.
Thus, the following has been prohibited in the region:
• Washing vehicles outside of dedicated locations, namely service stations, using water-saving techniques as much as possible;
• Washing pavements, streets and storefronts except for sanitary purposes;
• Irrigation of stadiums and public or private green spaces during the day;
• Filling private or public swimming pools more than once a year with the obligation to equip pools with a recycling system;
• Exploitation, without prior authorization, of wells and holes.
• Any user of wells or holes must be equipped with meters.
The same document also states that public and semi-public establishments are invited to conduct a water consumption audit by the end of March 2022 and a work plan to rationalize the use of water resources. They can request the assistance of distribution authorities such as ONEE, it specified, noting that industrial and tourism establishments are also affected by the measure.
