Marrakech: Hot air balloons take to the skies again under close supervision
The Marrakech tourist hot air balloon companies have resumed operations after several months of suspension. This resumption is taking place within a strengthened regulatory framework, while several new companies are still awaiting authorization to enter this lucrative market.
The activity had been suspended by the authorities following serious infractions. Operators had exceeded the authorized altitude levels, posing a safety risk for aircraft approaching the Marrakech-Ménara airport. In total, a dozen companies have been sanctioned, with measures ranging from temporary suspension to permanent closure, and even legal proceedings. The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has since organized meetings to ensure strict compliance with the specifications.
Despite these constraints, the sector remains attractive. With rates reaching 180 euros per person, the tourist demand is strong. Six new companies have expressed their willingness to invest, but they are facing an administrative obstacle. The granting of new licenses depends on the completion of a technical study required by the official bodies. No specialized firm has yet been found to carry out this expertise, which should lead to the launch of a new call for tenders to unblock the situation.
