Marrakech’s Affordable Rentals Raise Concerns Over Illegal Tourism Market

Several popular neighborhoods in Marrakech are increasingly attracting tourists looking for affordable rental offers, such as Bab Doukkala. But beware of illegal rentals.
This neighborhood attracts travelers in search of economical accommodations. Near the bus station, a multitude of furnished apartments offer overnight stays at very attractive prices, competitive compared to hotels, reports Kech24.
Despite the entry into force of a new law on the rental of housing a year ago, this market seems to escape any regulation. Decree No. 2.23.441, intended to regulate tourist rentals, is struggling to be applied in this neighborhood where rooms are rented between 80 and 150 dirhams per night.
This lack of control represents a potential security risk. It could facilitate the development of illegal activities and provide a refuge for individuals seeking to evade the authorities.
Yet the law is clear: any furnished rental for tourist purposes must be subject to authorization and comply with strict conditions. The owner must in particular provide documents such as his identity card, the insurance contract of the accommodation and photos of it.
The objective of this law is to regulate the rental sector, which is booming due to the growing demand from travelers, especially during vacation periods. It also aims to fight against the anarchy and excesses that can harm security and public order.
