Mainz Terminates Anwar El Ghazi’s Contract Over Pro-Palestine Social Media Posts

The German football club Mainz has confirmed the dismissal of the player of Moroccan origin Anwar El Ghazi. This decision follows the footballer’s statements in support of Palestine, shared on social media on October 17.
Despite the club’s recommendations to reconsider his position, El Ghazi reiterated his support, stating: "I remain faithful to my words, supporting humanity and the oppressed until my last breath."
Following this stance, Mainz had indicated that it would legally examine the situation. This has led to the decision to terminate the player’s contract. "1. FSV Mainz 05 has terminated its collaboration with Anwar El Ghazi following his statements on social media," the German club specified on its website.
In response to this action, El Ghazi shared a message on his Instagram account, reaffirming his commitment to the Palestinian cause: "Defending what is right, even alone. The loss of my job cannot be compared to the horror experienced by the innocent in Gaza. Stop these killings."
