Macron’s Speech on ’Islamist Separatism’ Overshadowed by Veiled Woman Photo Controversy

A photo of the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, taken during his visit on Tuesday, February 18, to Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin), has sparked a heated controversy on social media.
While Emmanuel Macron went to deliver a speech against "Islamist separatism" in Mulhouse, he is seen next to a woman fully veiled. This photo quickly provoked the anger of the French, including politicians.
On the set of "Les Grandes Gueules", teacher Barbara Lefebvre criticized Emmanuel Macron for not reacting to this breach of the 2010 law, which prohibits wearing in public a garment concealing the face. "He cannot say that he does not see it. It is pure provocation of political Islam and the President of the Republic acts as if he does not see it. [...] He, as the first representative of the law, should have told her to remove the bottom of her veil," she fumes with anger.
"Beyond the statements made, an Executive determined to fight Islamism is an Executive that refuses this kind of provocation. Otherwise, the weakness of words remains in the face of the shock of photos," wrote Céline Pina, a French politician, columnist and essayist, mainly known for her criticism of Islamism, on Twitter.
The leader of the National Rally also reacted to this photo. "What happened to this woman in full veil in front of #Macron? Was she apprehended as required by law? To face #communitarianism, we must first apply the law with full firmness and put an end to these incessant provocations," Marine Le Pen tweeted.
