Macron Removes Three Ministers Ahead of French Elections
Thursday 28 March 2019, by
French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to end the functions of Mounir Mahjoubi as well as two other ministers in anticipation of the upcoming elections in France.
"On the proposal of the Prime Minister, the President of the Republic has ended the functions of: Nathalie Loiseau, Minister attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, in charge of European Affairs; Benjamin Griveaux, Secretary of State to the Prime Minister, Government Spokesperson; Mounir Mahjoubi, Secretary of State to the Minister of the Economy and Finance and the Minister of Public Action and Accounts, in charge of Digital Affairs," writes the Elysée in a press release.
The Franco-Moroccan is running for the La République en Marche nomination for the 2020 municipal elections in Paris, which is also the case for Benjamin Griveaux. The candidate of the political party of Emmanuel Macron must be designated next June.
In an interview given a few days ago to the newspaper Le Parisien, Mahjoubi had revealed that he was a candidate for the mayor of Paris. "Yes, I will be a candidate for the nomination. Some don’t dare to say it, but we shouldn’t have false modesty. I will be a candidate as soon as the nomination process is opened," he had declared.
Among his priorities: housing "starting with those who are on the street" but also a "Paris police force that is in permanent dialogue with citizens and capable of doing what the national police cannot do: for example, come back cold the next day after an incident to talk about it with people."
