Macron Reaffirms Stance on Secularism: Veil Ban Limited to Public Services

The President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, spoke about the wearing of the veil during his trip to Reunion Island on October 24, stating, in the name of secularism, that the wearing of the veil in public space is not his concern.
"The wearing of the veil in public space is not my concern. That’s what secularism is," Emmanuel Macron said in an interview with local media.
According to the President of the Republic, what could make him act is the wearing of the veil in public services. "The wearing of the veil in public services, at school, when we educate our children, that’s my concern. That’s what secularism is," he affirmed.
Thus, President Macron recalls that "when we are in a space where public service is rendered, there is a duty of neutrality for the agents." Similarly, "when we educate our children - and that’s why it applies to nursery school, school, middle school, high school, and not to university, we ask those who educate them, like the children, not to have religious symbols," he said.
Moreover, it is planned that the President of the French Republic will deliver a speech on secularism in the coming days.
