Lufthansa Expands ’Green Fare’ Option to Morocco Flights, Aiming to Cut CO2 Emissions

Lufthansa has been offering green fares for all flights to Morocco from Europe since Wednesday. The group plans to halve its CO₂ emissions by 2030.
Tested in Scandinavia since August 2022, the "Green Fare" offer has been extended on February 15 to all flights in Europe and North Africa. This fare includes full compensation of CO₂ emissions with sustainable fuel and is more environmentally friendly. Unlike traditional kerosene, sustainable fuel allows 80% savings in CO₂ emissions and "envisages almost decarbonized aviation," the group said in a press release.
These green fares offer travelers the possibility to change their booking free of charge. They will be offered on more than 730,000 flights per year to Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia from Europe. Economy and Business class bookings can be made on the airlines’ websites and on the NDC platform.
"People not only want to fly and discover the world, they also want to protect it at the same time. We support our guests in this sense with suitable products. The launch of this product is an important step in our efforts to make air travel more climate-friendly," said Christina Foerster, member of the Lufthansa Group Executive Board and interim CEO of Brussels Airlines.
And Tamur Goudarzi Pour, Chief Commercial Officer of SWISS, added: "Together, we are sending an important signal to the market to stimulate the production and development of sustainable fuels. Their large-scale deployment will only be possible if customers, airlines and technology providers unite and receive political support."
Lufthansa aims to achieve carbon-neutral balance by 2050. The group intends to reduce its net CO₂ emissions by half by 2030 compared to 2019 through reduction and compensation measures. It is the first airline group in Europe to set a CO₂ emissions reduction target, in line with the objectives of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.
