Lee Murray: Wife Demands Morocco Release Heist Mastermind on Humanitarian Grounds

The wife of former MMA fighter Lee Murray, imprisoned in Morocco for 19 years over the record £53 million robbery in the United Kingdom is calling for his immediate release on health and humanitarian grounds.

Nicola Murray says that her husband, now 48, is suffering from “serious health problems” after spending nearly two decades behind bars. According to reports from The Sun, the family is now urging the British government to intervene to secure his pardon or repatriation, as the former champion has never been able to hold his granddaughter in his arms.

“I watched my children grow up in photographs,” Lee Murray said during a call from his Moroccan cell. Sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role as the mastermind behind the 2006 Securitas depot robbery, he says he has served his sentence and is asking for a chance to rebuild his life after what remains the largest cash robbery in British history.

After the heavily armed heist in Kent, Murray fled to Morocco, a country whose nationality he holds. He was arrested in Rabat in June 2006 after spending part of the loot on a luxury villa. Although £32 million was never recovered, Moroccan justice severely punished him, increasing his sentence from ten to twenty-five years in prison in 2010.

Legal experts denounce the “unprecedented” treatment, pointing out that Murray has already spent more time in detention than some individuals convicted of terrorism. They believe it is now “time to bring him home” and are calling on London to exert diplomatic pressure on Rabat to secure his release on humanitarian grounds.
