Lamine Yamal Goal Celebration Sparks Islamophobic Backlash
Starting against Saudi Arabia, Lamine Yamal scored Spain’s opening goal in this World Cup. His celebration, interpreted by some as a kiss to the pitch, quickly drew commentary. Some even went much further.
Lamine Yamal reclaimed his place in the Spanish starting eleven and made an immediate impact. The FC Barcelona player opened the scoring against Saudi Arabia, an important goal for a team that remained scoreless against Cape Verde in their first match. Spain went on to win convincingly, boosted by the return of their young striker.

But it was also his celebration that caught attention. After his goal, Yamal knelt on the pitch, in a gesture that many interpreted as a kiss to the ground. Fátima Hamed, vice-president of the Ceuta Assembly, corrected this interpretation: "It’s not kissing the pitch, it’s a prostration that he performs as a Muslim."
