International SMS Fraud Ring Exposed: Moroccan Tech Expert Faces 4-Year Sentence in Belgium

Three individuals, including a Moroccan, are being prosecuted before the Liège Correctional Court as alleged members of an international SMS fraud or "SMS fishing" network that is said to have stolen more than two million euros from more than 160 victims in the Liège region. The public prosecutor’s office has requested prison sentences of 18 to 56 years against them.
The three defendants contested the importance of their role in this international computer fraud and SMS fraud network, which consists of sending an error SMS or under the name of a well-known brand to victim lists chosen on the darkweb.
The Moroccan, considered a computer genius, had put his skills at the service of the network directed from Morocco, Sud Info reported. The federal prosecutor’s office had requested a 56-month prison sentence against him. But his lawyer, Me Bosquin, pleaded for his acquittal or, failing that, a suspended sentence, stressing his low involvement in the case, since his intervention was limited to sending the SMS. The defendant has already served 15 months in pretrial detention and has been very cooperative during the investigation.
As for the second defendant against whom an 18-month sentence had been requested, his lawyer, Me Van der Beesen, contested the facts and requested an acquittal or a suspended sentence. The third defendant, absent, is being tried by default. He faces an 18-month sentence. The court will deliver its verdict on March 21.
