Hundreds of Women Rally in Paris Against Rising Islamophobia
Monday 21 October 2019, by
The Place de la République in Paris was the scene last Saturday of a large demonstration that brought together several hundred women. The aim was for them to denounce the Islamophobic climate that is gaining ground in France.
Behind this large-scale demonstration is a collective of mothers from the Yvelines (Paris region).
A few days ago, Fatima E., a veiled mother, was accosted by an extreme-right elected official within the Regional Council of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
Through this demonstration, this collective of mothers intended to protest against this aggression, which had sparked a lively controversy within the political class and the Muslim community in France.
The announcement of the rally launched by the organizers on social networks was widely followed. This is evidenced by the large mobilization observed on the Place de la République in Paris on Saturday afternoon.
Among the demonstrators, we could note some personalities from civil society and the political arena, such as the student trade unionist, Maryam Pougetoux, and the deputy of "La France Insoumise", Danièle Obono.
Both joined their voices to those of the demonstrators to denounce the Islamophobic climate prevailing in the country.
This demonstration has paved the way for several others in the coming days and weeks, say the organizers.
Furthermore, the climax will be reached, in particular, with the "National Mobilization Day" scheduled to be held on October 27, in all the major cities of France, "to fight against racism targeting Muslim communities".
