Hundreds of Undocumented Migrants Stage Hunger Strike in Brussels for Legal Status

About 250 undocumented migrants, including Moroccans, have been on a hunger strike since May 23 to protest against their living and working conditions. Housed in a church in the center of Brussels, they want the Brussels authorities to regularize their situation.
These migrants are mainly from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt but also Pakistan. They have been residing and working in Belgium for years without being able to benefit from a legal status. Ahmed is one of those observing this type of strike. Despite the deprivations, he remains focused on the goal. "I sometimes wonder how our government allows itself to sleep when it has so many people dying of hunger, dying of suffering," reports euronews.
They are not entitled to health care, social protection or financial assistance. On site, volunteer doctors are assisting them. Among them, Cécile Vanheuverzwijn who does not hide her concern. "Patients are getting worse and worse. There are several heart problems, kidney problems, also psychological difficulties and several suicide attempts." She says she is concerned about the consequences if the strike continues.
Even if the hunger strike of migrants does not elicit a reaction from the press, the information has nevertheless reached the authorities.
