Homeless Moroccan Man's Death in La Rochelle Sparks Calls for Justice, Family Plans Repatriation

The street companions of Saïd, a Moroccan homeless man found dead in La Rochelle on August 6 on the site of the Gabut industrial wasteland, organized a white march to pay tribute to him and demand that justice be done. The body of the deceased will be repatriated to Morocco on August 18 where he will be buried.

"Tribute to Saïd. Your loved ones love you. May justice be done." This is the message written on the banner with which Jamila, Saïd Ghame’s sister, a 48-year-old homeless Moroccan found dead on August 6 on the site of the Gabut industrial wasteland, near the Saint-Nicolas tower, in the Old Port of La Rochelle, last Friday, reports France Info. Relatives, family, friends or street companions participated in this white march. "My brother, he was someone who loved to live, who helped everyone, the proof: all the people who are there for him," reacts Jamila.

The emotion was strong. "Saïd was my friend. We shared a lot of things. He was a guy with a big heart, when you have nothing, he gives you," recalls one of his friends and street companions. "I don’t know what happened that night. I miss him terribly, he’s my brother. I love him. I saw him at noon, with my daughter, and in the evening I wasn’t there for him, when he was always there for me," he adds. The participants in the march demand only one thing: that justice be done. "I’m not a bad person, there’s no revenge, but I hope justice will do what it has to do," demands another.

Jamila, Saïd’s sister, agrees: "May justice be done, may the one who did this be punished. Thinking that the murderer is still free and that he can do it again to someone else, it’s something that drives me crazy. As long as he is not found, I will not be at peace. It won’t give me my brother back, but justice must be done, simply." Back from her vacation in Morocco after learning the sad news, she wants to follow the investigation opened following the death of her brother and organize his funeral. The body of the deceased will be repatriated to Morocco on August 18 and buried with his family, in Meknes.
