Hantavirus Medical Plane Stranded Canaries Morocco Refusal

A medical aircraft repatriating two hantavirus patients to Amsterdam landed in the Canaries after being denied a stopover by Morocco. Following a breakdown, the aircraft remains stuck on the Spanish tarmac.

The aircraft, belonging to a Turkish airline, had left Praia in Cape Verde late morning with the objective of reaching the Netherlands. A technical stopover to refuel was initially scheduled in Marrakech. But as it began its descent, Moroccan authorities categorically refused it access.

Forced to circle in Moroccan airspace, the crew had to request landing clearance from Spain. The aircraft finally landed at Gando airport in Gran Canaria, parking in a military zone away from the civil terminal, as reported by Spanish newspaper ABC.

As the plane was preparing to depart with a full tank, an electrical failure struck the isolation bubble of one of the patients, grounding the aircraft. Passengers remain confined inside, complying with the strict demand of the president of the Canaries, Fernando Clavijo, who required that travelers "not leave the plane at any time."

The Spanish Ministry of Health assures that the situation presents no public risk. A replacement aircraft from Oslo is expected during the night to complete this transfer to Amsterdam, with a planned stopover in Malaga.
