Global Citrus Production Set to Decline, Morocco Faces 31% Drop Due to Weather

The forecast data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) indicates that world citrus production for the 2019-2020 season will decline. Morocco’s production will drop by 31%.
According to the January 2020 USDA report, the bad weather conditions and the delayed rainfall are among the causes of the announced decline in world citrus production for the next season.
Morocco’s production will suffer the same fate as the global one. Orange production will thus drop from 1,183,000 tons for the 2018-2019 season to 815,000 tons for the 2019-2020 season, a 31% decrease, due to the lack of water resources and unfavorable weather conditions. A decline will also be observed in exports and consumption.
As for mandarin production, it will drop from 1,375,000 tons (2018-2019) to 910,000 tons (2019-2020), representing a 34% decrease. Exports, on the other hand, will be set at 360,000 tons compared to 617,000 tons recorded during the previous season. Despite this decline, Morocco remains the main supplier of the European market in mandarins.
Regarding lemon (yellow and green) production, production will be 11,000 tons (2019-2020) compared to 15,000 tons for the 2018-2019 season.
