French Tourists Flout COVID Rules in Morocco, Prompting Stricter Lockdown

All the French motorhome enthusiasts stranded in Morocco due to the closure of air and sea borders do not shine by their discipline. Nelly, confined to a campsite near Tiznit, recounts how some violate confinement and the state of health emergency.

"At first, we could go out as we pleased, with an authorization. But since the French are not disciplined, naturally, a small number have gone beyond that. So the measures have tightened and today we can only go out once a week, with an authorization and a mask," Nelly confides to the website Le Monde du camping.

"However, we lack nothing. A market gardener and a fishmonger come twice a week. A courier brings us our groceries for 10 dirhams commission, or 1€! Restaurants deliver to us free of charge, on request. We have a lot to learn from their kindness," she says. For her, the visit of the Moroccan authorities was very positive, in the sense that they explained the strengthening of containment with tact.

However, Nelly regrets that this visit could not bring the undisciplined back on the right path. "It didn’t have much impact, since a few hours later, the gatherings around the boules were resuming, as well as the outdoor walks. But the worst is the party for some as if nothing had happened: alcohol, singing, music from noon until 5 p.m., with a resumption in the evening until 11 p.m. The worst caricature of motorhome enthusiasts for our detractors," she laments.

Although she is disappointed with the behavior of her compatriots, Nelly still calls on them to respect the customs of the kingdom. "It would be good to remember that we are in a Muslim country where everyone should respect the customs. Moreover, with Ramadan arriving at the end of the month, ladies, don’t go shopping in town in short shorts and tank tops. A little respect and decency for this country that welcomes us so kindly. This attitude is shocking, even provocative," she insists.
