French Terror Suspect Arrested in Morocco After Years on the Run

Thursday 31 January 2019, by Said

Facing an arrest warrant issued by the French authorities, a French national was arrested this week by the Moroccan police.

Originally from the Gard region in southern France, the man was sentenced on December 14 to 3 years in prison for "direct and public apology for terrorism and participation in a criminal association," reports the website Objectif Gard.

At the age of 33, he had fled when the Nîmes Court of Appeal had just decided on his incarceration in 2015 just after the Paris attacks. During a search, the police found 67 flags glorifying the terrorist group Islamic State at his home. Furthermore, according to the investigators, he tried to recruit young people from the region to go on jihad in Iraq and Syria.

Indicted, he had managed to flee and the Moroccan police have just proceeded with his arrest and should soon expel him to France. However, it is unknown whether he has been in Morocco since that date or was just passing through.
