French Student Activist Remains in Critical Condition After Self-Immolation Attempt

The health condition of the student who tried to self-immolate in the middle of the street last Friday, November 8 in Lyon, has stabilized in recent days. However, his health remains critical.
"Anas is under deep anesthesia since his arrival at the hospital. His condition has been stable for a few days. He is clinging on and fighting," according to his relatives quoted by Le Parisien. His friend confides that he "is in an artificial coma" and that "his condition is stabilizing".
A 22-year-old student and activist within the Solidaires union, Anas K. wanted to take his own life in front of the headquarters of the Regional Center for University and School Works (Crous) in Lyon for economic reasons, according to a letter he wrote on the subject. Anas K. is without a scholarship for having repeated his second year of undergraduate studies.
Like him, many other students are also in precariousness. "Students sleep outside, are fragile in terms of their health, they no longer have the resources to live decently; students cannot attend classes because they have to work. We also have students who are hungry," describes the university president, Nathalie Dompnier, to Le Monde.
