French Retirees Return from Morocco after Two-Month Lockdown Ordeal

Suzanne and Gérard, one of the couples from Charente-Maritime, stranded in Morocco for more than two months, were lucky enough to board a boat on Tuesday, May 12, to return to France. In total, five thousand motorhomes are still stuck in the kingdom.

"We say thank you to Morocco, which took very good care of us. On the other hand, we don’t say thank you to France!" Suzanne is angry with her country. She and her husband Gérard had gone to Morocco more than two months ago for a vacation and found themselves confined there.

The couple experienced eight weeks of hardship: booking tickets for a boat that was ultimately canceled, new booking at an exorbitant price. "A real scam," laments Gérard. "During all this time, the embassy and the consulate were unavailable," fumes Suzanne angrily.

On Tuesday, luck smiled on the couple. Gérard and Suzanne boarded one of the boats made available by an Italian company in the early afternoon to return to Charente-Maritime. For the retiree, it would not be enough since she assures that there are five thousand motorhomes still blocked in Morocco.

Catherine, also stranded in Morocco with her husband for several months, did not have the same luck as Suzanne. They are still stuck in their Tazzarine campsite, in the south of the country. But the situation is becoming untenable for the retiree. "We are completely in the dark. No one gives us any information. And we are very stressed. We are really not well. I can’t wait for all this to end," she laments.
