French Officer to Stand Trial for Murder in Fatal Shooting of Teen Nahel

The police officer who fired the shot that killed Nahel, a teenager on June 27, 2023, in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine) near Paris, has not completely escaped legal consequences.
The police officer who fired the shot that killed the teenager will be tried for murder, announced the prosecutor and the president of the court of this city on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the epicenter of a week of riots following these events. "Two investigating magistrates of the judicial court of Nanterre have issued today an indictment order" ordering "the referral of the police officer to the Assize Court" for "voluntary homicide," states a press release.
In November 2023, Mounia, Nahel’s mother, had organized a protest march against the provisional release of the police officer and to demand justice for her son’s death. Victims of police violence, as well as left-wing activists and mothers who fear their children might suffer the same tragic fate as Nahel, had participated in the demonstration. On this occasion, the protesters had expressed outrage at the release of the police officer who killed the teenager. The slogan "Justice for Nahel" had been widely chanted during the demonstration.
Furthermore, internet users had denounced the fundraising campaign launched by far-right groups to support the police officer, which had raised 1.6 million euros.
