French Muslim Council Sets Ramadan 2025 to Begin March 1

The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) announced that the month of Ramadan 1446 H will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025. This date was determined according to the calculation criteria adopted by the CFCM in 2013, which are based on the observation of the new moon. This will be visible, according to these criteria, in almost the entire world from Friday, February 28, 2025.
The CFCM takes the opportunity of this announcement to recall the rules relating to fasting and the exemptions provided for. The elderly, the sick, pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as travelers, are exempt from the obligation to fast. However, it is recommended to consult a doctor to assess one’s personal situation.
The Zakat El Fitr, the obligatory alms due by each Muslim family, has been set at 9 euros per person for this year. This amount is a reference, but variations may exist according to the different religious interpretations (between 7 and 12 euros). The CFCM invites each believer to refer to the religious authority he usually follows.
This alms is intended for the needy, regardless of their religious affiliation. It should preferably be paid to the destitute residing nearby, but can be sent elsewhere if necessary. Although traditionally paid at the end of Ramadan, the Zakat El Fitr can be paid from the beginning of the month.
For people permanently unable to fast (chronic illnesses, advanced age...), a compensatory alms, the Fidya, is provided. Its amount, per day not fasted, varies according to legal opinions, ranging from 2 to 12 euros. The CFCM encourages everyone to follow the opinion that best suits their situation.
The CFCM insistently emphasizes that the Zakat El Fitr and the Fidya are exclusively intended for the poor and cannot be used to finance mosques. Mosques collecting funds must clearly inform donors and separate the accounts.
