French Muslim Council Seeks to Strengthen Role in National Religious Landscape

The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) has stressed the need to "capitalize" on its experience "with its successes and failures". This was at the end of a meeting of the executive office aimed at "taking stock of the situation and the future of the representative bodies of the Muslim faith".

"Like other faiths, the Muslim faith must have representative bodies capable of fully integrating it into the religious landscape of our country," said the CFCM, which intends to "continue its mission under the direction of the collegiate presidency as defined in (its) statutes, and this for a provisional period until the next Extraordinary General Assembly which must take place soon".

"Evolving the representation of the Muslim faith in France to give it a new impetus by relying on the grassroots actors at the departmental level, whether or not they are affiliated with a federation making up the CFCM, must be at the heart of these proposals," insists the body, which invites prefects and participants in the Forum of Islam in France (FORIF) to "quickly engage with the leaders of places of worship in their departments in a broad consultation with a view to laying the foundations for a new form of representation of the Muslim faith".

This statement from the CFCM came on the eve of the meeting scheduled for this Thursday between all Muslim federations at the Great Mosque of Paris. A meeting that the Coordination, made up of dissident organizations of the CFCM, announces "decisive for the renewal of the representative bodies of Muslims in France". Mohammed Moussaoui, president of the Union of Mosques of France (UMF), assured Saphir News that he will not take part in this session.
