French Muslim Council Adopts Charter Affirming Islam's Compatibility with Republican Values

The members of the French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) have signed a "charter of principles" of Islam in France. The initiative was welcomed by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin.

The wish expressed by the French Head of State three months ago, on the creation of a charter of the values of Islam, has just been realized. After a real battle, the CFCM agreed this Saturday, January 16. The text of seven to eight pages, mainly confirms "the principle of equality between men and women", "the compatibility" of the Muslim faith with the Republic and emphasizes "the rejection of the instrumentalization of Islam for political purposes" and "non-interference" of foreign states, indicated the president of the CFCM, Mohammed Moussaoui, in a press release, reports RTL.

This charter, which was presented to Emmanuel Macron, was welcomed by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, to whom the charter was presented on Saturday at Beauvau, noting "a very significant advance" and the mark of a commitment against "political Islam". However, discussions are still ongoing within the CFCM regarding the creation of the National Council of Imams wanted by the French president. The rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris had announced that he was leaving the negotiations of the National Council of Imams requested by Macron, denouncing the "Islamist component" within the CFCM. Thus, clashes are taking place between the nine federations of the CFCM, especially on the issues of apostasy or political Islam, according to a source close to the file.

For the record, in mid-November, Emmanuel Macron had called on Muslim representatives to put an end to certain "ambiguities" and was also considering expelling from France, within four years, 300 foreign imams "seconded" by Turkey, Morocco and Algeria. Meanwhile, France has experienced two attacks, that of teacher Samuel Paty and that of the basilica of Nice.
