French Motorhome Tourists Stranded in Morocco Amid Border Closures

Steeve and his little family left their commune of Saint-Sever-de-Rustan in the Hautes-Pyrénées on March 4 for a vacation in Morocco and Spain. This was without counting on the setbacks of the health crisis related to the spread of the coronavirus.

After fifteen days of travel, the family is informed of the imminent closure of the borders between France and Spain and between Spain and Morocco. "When we learned this, we contacted the embassy. The latter advised us to go to the port of Ceuta to be repatriated," says Steeve. Aboard his 4X4 vehicle, equipped for long journeys, they reach this place, believing they are at the end of their difficulties. "Two hours later, we learn that the port is closed again, until further notice," details the tourist.

It was not until Wednesday, March 24 that he received an SMS from the embassy asking him to go to the port of Tanger Med, thirty kilometers south of where they were parked. On their arrival, not only were the officials of this port unaware of their arrival, but they noticed that they were not the only ones in this case. "There are about 1,000 to 1,200 motorhomes in this convoy," says Steeve, on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

This is how they were offered to park a few meters from the port, "on a concrete parking lot with a water point and four toilets". "1,200 people parked less than a meter apart. Children, babies, the elderly, sometimes with respiratory problems, live here," Steeve worries. The family is confined to their vehicle.

"The conditions are difficult and the worst of all is that we don’t know how long this will last," explains the resident of Saint-Sever-de-Rustan, who stresses that he has the impression of being forgotten by the authorities. "We just want to know if things are being set in motion regarding our situation and that of all these people living in this parking lot," the thirty-year-old protests angrily. Steeve does not hide his anger. After more than four days, blocked in this parking lot, he is at the end of his rope.
