French MP of Moroccan Descent Receives Racist Threat at National Assembly

Member of Parliament Hanane Mansouri, from the Union of the Right for the Republic (UDR) and close to Éric Ciotti, received a threatening letter containing racist and antisemitic insults at the National Assembly on Wednesday, and has filed a complaint.

The handwritten letter includes the phrase: "Be careful of Algerians in Paris and greetings from Samuel Paty". Ms. Mansouri, 24 years old and born to Moroccan parents, stated on the social network X: "You do not impress me, I will continue to defend the interests of France".

The elected official, highly critical of the Algerian government in a context of Franco-Algerian diplomatic tensions, had in early May reproached the French government for considering "fighting" the Algerian authorities "with a water pistol, where they fight us with a bazooka". She had also stated, referring to the Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal imprisoned in Algeria since November, that "obviously, and thankfully so, force and firmness must be used".

The letter addressed to the deputy, described as "particularly vile", also contains the statements: "Moroccans don’t hold a candle to Algerians. Algeria is a great country that made a revolution", as well as "You have let the wolf (Israel) into your home". The source text describes these latter remarks as antisemitic.

Hanane Mansouri had already been targeted by insults such as "token Arab", "beurette", "dirty mop" during her legislative campaign. Éric Ciotti had then written on X: "We will never back down in the face of threats and intimidation!"
