French Market Official Links Egg Shortage to Ramadan Consumption

The vice-president of the markets of France, Maria Da Silva, attributes the egg shortage currently observed in certain regions to Muslims who would consume this product enormously during the month of Ramadan.
Speaking on BFMTV on Sunday, Maria Da Silva stated that during the holy month of Ramadan, "people consume a lot of eggs. They cook, they make their cakes, so yes, there is a huge consumption of eggs at the moment." This sequence quickly went viral on social media, garnering more than a million and a half views, relayed by the Anadolu Agency.
Naturally, the remarks of the vice-president of the markets of France provoked an avalanche of reactions on the web. "Find me a more Islamophobic country than France," commented an Internet user. Another said he regretted that "the same lousy shortcuts" were used "to point the finger at Muslims." "You are very sick people," reacted Aly Diouara, the LFI (La France Insoumise) deputy.
This is the second time a controversy over a product shortage during Ramadan has erupted. In 2022, Michel-Edouard Leclerc, CEO of the E. Leclerc hypermarkets, had stated that the shortage of oil and flour noted at the time was due to the high consumption of Muslims who would "fry sheep" during the holy month. These remarks had provoked a lively controversy and calls for a boycott of his establishments.
