French Intelligence Scrutinizes 200 Moroccan Imams in Anti-Radicalization Effort

A special brigade created within the French intelligence services is investigating the lives of 200 Moroccan imams, religious leaders and teachers sent to France. The investigators are also delving into the lives of their families, relatives and friends.

This brigade is investigating their political orientations, ideological tendencies and their relationships with active associations and organizations in France or abroad, especially those known for their radicalism, reports Assabah. And also their bank accounts to verify the nature and sources of income as well as the exact amounts of their transfers to Morocco.

This initiative is in line with the legal and regulatory framework that France is working to put in place to fight political Islamism. The aim is to put an end to radicalization and foreign influence on the Muslim community. Last February, the French government had also made it known that it was working on the end of detached imams in 2024. "I have indicated to the foreign countries, which are the countries of origin - Morocco, Turkey and Algeria - that the deadline is 2024," said the then Interior Minister, Christophe Castaner.

The Head of State, for his part, had expressed his desire to put an end to the teaching of languages and cultures (ELCO) from the next school year. "We cannot teach things that are clearly not compatible either with the laws of the Republic or with the history as we see it," Emmanuel Macron hammered.
